This patriarch, together with George Ellwanger, created the most prominent nursery in the world, circa 1840’s – 1890’s. Transforming the once ‘Four City’ into the world class “Flower City”, many varieties of flowers and fruits nurtured by the Ellwanger & Barry Nurseries on Mount Hope Avenue fill Rochester and gifted Highland Park where the annual Lilac Festival still blooms each Spring. The Mt. Hope Nurseries expanded fruit and flowers across the United States. A prolific writer on the subject of horticulture, Patrick Barry laid some of the groundwork for today’s national horticulture societies.
